Carnegiea gigantea (Saguaro Cactus) is a massive, long-lived (when full grown) cactus native to the Sonoran Desert, famous for its tall, columnar shape and upward-curving arms. It thrives in full sun and very well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil, with extremely low water needs. Growth is slow-taking decades to develop arms- but it can reach 12-15 meters tall over its lifespan of 150+ years. In late spring to early summer, it produces large, white, night-blooming flowers that attract bats, birds, and insects, followed by red, edible fruit. Best suited to arid, frost-free climates or large containers in warm, dry environments.
